MATCH REPORTS WEEK ENDING 23/09/01

Under 9s Panthers : The game started at a slow pace, both sides with not really many chances which led to the first goal coming from a corner deflected in off one of our own players.  This seemed to kick-start the Panthers into action, with a fine first goal and equaliser from Luke Parker which concluded the first half (1-1).  The second half saw the Panthers take full control of the game which led to the winning goal from Greg Croasdale to secure another marvellous win and great performance by the whole team to extend their unbeaten run in the league.  Final score 2-1 to the Panthers. The under 14s chalked up their third successive win in a gripping contest against a seldom beaten Barrowford Celtic. Despite Celtic scoring first and exerting sustained pressure on the Rovers' goal, Rovers led 2-1 at the break with strikes from Chris Brankin and Phil ( 4 games / 12 goals  ) Eatough. A dramatic second half saw Barrowford exert further pressure, but memorable defensive performances from 'Keeper Andy Green and Captain James Robinson saw Rovers' put up strong resistance. Eatough added his second and Peter Nugent grabbed Rovers' fourth, as Rovers' finally triumphed 4-3 in a thriller.

Under 18s : With on form goal scorer Matt Mercer sidelined with a suspected hamstring injury, David (what do you mean rare goal) Kemp got a chance to play centre forward against Islington Boys on Memorial (Meadow) Park. Usman Amhed took a chance early on to put the U18s in front , David Kemp beat the offside trap to grab a second and Steven (Sponsored by Vics Inhalers ) Scirlock hit a screamer from near the right hand corner flag to see it curl in to beat the keeper just before half time to make it 3 -0. The U18s started where they left off in the second half, with substitute Michael( I scored last night) Timmins replacing the under the weather Steven Skirlock. David (I hope my uncle saw that) Kemp opened the second half scoring with a cheeky 30 yard chip ( 29 metre French fries approx, Euro Conversion) which saw the keeper stranded off his line , Nick ( It was not a cross, honest) Ford blasted home a shot from the edge of the box, Danny (Bertie Bee) Smith hit home a failed corner clearance and nearly broke the net. Matt (Ussy scored I`ll have to go on) Mercer had a brief run out to replace the injured Ste (oh my back, nose , b***s) Marsden and narrowly missed getting on the score sheet when his shot just went wide of the (corner) post. Meanwhile pacey forward Usman Amhed danced around the defenders who could only look on in amazement, he then unselfishly played it back to Andy( my God someone passed to me) Bennett to make it seven. However Islington were not without their chances during the game, hitting the post twice and being denied on several occasions by Richard Law Riding, who showed why he is first choice keeper. An excellent display by the referee ( I`m sorry I can not remember his name) with both sides giving him full marks as he kept the game flowing throughout making it an entertaining game to watch.  Final score 7 - 0 with Man of the Match, powerhouse utility player (He`s one) David Kemp.
