Under 14s girls lift the cup after a thriller!!!!!!

Great Harwood Rovers under 14s girls produced a stunning performance beside the seaside at Lytham YMCA to take the North Valley League consolation cup with a 7-6 victory over Mill Hill after extra time. On a full sized pitch on a red hot day, due to a shortage of players the 10 girl Rovers’ heroines overcame strong opposition after an epic game, which was witnessed by a large crowd including a strong contingent from Harwood.

Molly opened the scoring for Rovers, however, Mill Hill surged back into a 3-1 lead, but by half time Rovers had drawn level at 3-3 with the equaliser coming from Amber’s spectacular volley from the edge of the box which saw the ball rip into the roof of the net… Ronaldo would have been proud.

The second half saw the lead change hands, but in the last minute of normal time Mill held a 6-5 lead. With the last kick of the game, Molly scored from a Rovers’ corner. The first half of extra time was goalless, but the second half saw Rovers’ keeper Ella make a brilliant save with only minutes remaining. In the final minute with penalties looming, the ball broke towards the half way line where Tanith picked up the ball and spotted the Mill Hill ‘keeper off her line, she then proceeded to score the goal of the decade with a 40 yard lob over the ‘keeper to win the cup for Rovers!!!!!

Melissa Wolstenholme, Rovers’ elated manager, was over the moon. She said that “all of the girls worked as a team and never gave up with 10 players. They are a credit to the club and I am proud of each and every one of them the way they’ve gone about this season”.
